Under the heading "Robin Hood in Literature", Dobson & Taylor list in chronological sequence 62 literary works from the period c. 1377 to 1956 that deal entirely with Robin Hood or contain allusions to the outlaw; with brief comments on each work.

Sussex lists some 300 references for the period indicated in the title, the majority being parish or municipal account items relating to Robin Hood festivals. The list includes most known literary allusions from 1600 or earlier as well as a sprinkling of historical references to persons named Robin Hood from the "dark" period before the first literary allusions.
